The Kharkiv school of drawing has a long history spanning nearly two centuries. While drawing has always been a core discipline at the Academy, the department was formally established in the late 1930s. Its history is closely associated with the names of renowned professors such as S. Prokhorov, M. Sharonov, H. Bondarenko, O. Kokel, and S. Besiedin.
The Department of Painting was founded in the first days of the Academy’s establishment (1921) and holds a leading position in training specialists in both fine arts and design education. It preserves and develops the traditions of Ukrainian realist painting based on the study of nature. The department focuses on providing artists with fundamental professional skills in painting and composition while fostering international academic cooperation.
The Department of Graphics traces its origins back to the first half of the 20th century. Today, the teaching staff not only carefully preserves established traditions but also actively explores new methods for training specialists in book and easel graphics, as well as original poster design. The educational process is based on mutual respect and a personalised approach to each creative individual.
Established in 1983, the department combines a strong academic tradition with the challenges and demands of the modern era. We train Bachelor’s and Master’s students for professional work across various fields and techniques of both traditional and contemporary monumental art and street art.
Our graduates also express themselves in the field of sacred painting, engage in creative work and exhibition activities, and successfully teach and promote themselves in the contemporary art market.
A wide range of artistic techniques (mural painting, ceramics, mosaics, stained glass, etc.), extensive practical training, attention to individual development, and a focus on artistic expression through real-world projects and exhibition activities provide our graduates with strong professional background and open wide creative opportunities.
The department aims to train broadly qualified art historians who acquire fundamental knowledge in the theory and history of art and related disciplines, along with practical skills in research, museum studies, curatorial practice, teaching, publishing, and gallery work.
The Department of Restoration and Expertise of Works of Art was established in 1994, the same year it graduated its first cohort of specialists. From 1996 to 2000, the department was headed by Associate Professor Yu. Kovalov, PhD in Technical Sciences. Since 2000, it has been led by Associate Professor A. Doluda, PhD in Technical Sciences. Today, the Department of Easel and Monumental Painting Restoration continues to evolve while preserving the best traditions of its past.
The Kharkiv School of Sculpture has deep roots and a long-standing tradition. It was founded by Eleonora Bloch, a talented student of the renowned French sculptor Auguste Rodin. A prominent sculptor and an outstanding educator, Bloch’s creative and pedagogical work became the primary channel through which Ukrainian sculptors became familiar with the traditions of European plastic arts.
