On June 1, 2026, the “Retrospective” project by Volodymyr SHEVCHENKO, a prominent Kharkiv graphic artist and Head of the Department of Graphics, who for many years led the Faculty of Fine Arts, was opened in the cosy art space of the Kharkiv State Academy of Design and Arts.

According to the author, the exhibition brings together works created between 1970 and 1996, during the pre-digital era. These are hand-crafted pieces representing various forms of graphic art: watercolour painting, drawing, book illustration, poster design, and printmaking. Some of the works date back to his student years, while others belong to the period of his teaching career.

The event was officially opened by the Rector of the Academy, Oleksandr SOBOLIEV, who emphasised that Volodymyr SHEVCHENKO is one of the founders of the Kharkiv School of Graphic Arts. He highlighted the artist’s well-known works in photography and stressed the special value of his watercolour landscapes depicting the scenery of the Poltava region. A particular highlight of the exhibition was Volodymyr Shevchenko’s diploma project — a series of posters dedicated to the Ukrainian philosopher Hryhorii Skovoroda, executed in the multicolour linocut technique.

Maryna TOKAR, First Vice-Rector of the Academy, praised the author’s high professional level and noted that the theme of his diploma project demonstrates that even back in the distant 1970s, Kharkiv was a Ukrainian city.

Vladyslav KUTATELADZE, Vice-Rector for Research, highlighted the intimate and poetic nature of the exhibition. He called Volodymyr Shevchenko one of the finest artists and congratulated the Department and the Faculty of Fine Arts on this inspiring art project. 

The main exposition was complemented by additional works from the “Retrospective” project that were not included in the main display. These works were showcased on a screen, creating a complete and multifaceted picture of the artist’s creative journey.

The “Retrospective” art project by Volodymyr Shevchenko offers all art enthusiasts a wonderful opportunity to enjoy his work in a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
