On August 21, 2026, the opening of the documentary and art exhibition “Great Compatriots: Barbara Karinska”, dedicated to the 140th anniversary of the birth of its central figure, took place in Kharkiv.
The project is implemented in the format of a travelling exhibition to mark the 140th anniversary of the Kharkiv-born Barbara Karinska — a fashion designer, creator of stage costumes for film and ballet, including the modern internationally recognised ballet tutu, and an Academy Award (Oscar) winner. The exhibition combines documentary and artistic sections. The documentary section features posters, rare photographs and archival documents, while the artistic section includes portraits, architectural landscapes, original theatre costumes and stage design sketches.
The Mayor of Kharkiv, Ihor TEREKHOV, attended the opening ceremony. He highlighted that hosting such events on the eve of Kharkiv City Day, Day of the National Flag, and Independence Day of Ukraine is particularly symbolic in terms of preserving the city’s heritage and fostering its cultural scene.
“Kharkiv has always been distinguished by its culture and intellectual potential, and we must preserve this heritage. Barbara Karinska’s work revolutionised the world of ballet, and her talent was honoured with the highest cinematographic accolade — an Academy Award. It is crucial that Kharkiv residents know the names of such outstanding figures, remember their history, and pass this cultural legacy on to future generations”, the Mayor emphasised.
The exhibition will run until September 12, 2026.
